North Korea defends satellite launch at UN

At the UN Security Council convened due to North Korea’s satellite launch, the United States directly criticized North Korea’s intentions.

[Linda Thomas Greenfield/U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations: “North Korea is shamelessly seeking to develop a nuclear weapons delivery system.”]

Not only did it use ballistic missile technology, but it was also pointed out that it was an extension of the development of nuclear weapons according to the five-year weapons development plan.

Then, North Korea insisted, saying, “Then when the United States launches a satellite, it uses a catapult?”

[Kim Seong/North Korea Ambassador to the United Nations: “Then when the United States launches a satellite, does it launch it with a balloon or use a catapult? This shows how absurd the so-called Security Council sanctions resolution against North Korea is.”]

He also mentioned defense rights, saying that the satellite launch was due to threats from the United States.

South Korea’s ambassador to the United Nations pointed out that North Korea’s claim is a mockery of the Security Council, saying it prohibits any launch that contributes to the development of ballistic missile technology.

[Hwang Jun-guk/Ambassador to the UN: “It is very deplorable to see the authority of a huge organization called the UN being repeatedly weakened and ridiculed by North Korea.”]

Suspicions of technology transactions between Russia and North Korea were also raised at the meeting.

Russia denied this and took North Korea’s side.

[Anna Evstigniva/Russia’s Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations: “We cannot stop developing traditional friendly and cooperative relations with North Korea, which have long historical roots.”]

In addition, even China took a stand against the West, and the Security Council meeting ended without even being able to adopt a statement condemning North Korea’s satellite launch.

For the past two years, UN Security Council meetings have always been the same.

The U.S. ambassador eventually complained, asking how many more meetings like this would have to be held.

This is Kim Yang-sun from KBS News in Washington.

G7 Condemns “violation of Security Council resolutions”… Russia “regrets Korea’s actions”

It is understood that the United States is currently conducting a detailed analysis of the situation following North Korea’s launch.

Since North Korea launched earlier than originally planned, it is expected that it will respond based on a detailed analysis of the reason, the trajectory drawn by the projectile, and the total distance traveled.

The U.S. State Department believes that the basic source of funds for the launch vehicle that North Korea claims is a satellite is an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM).

In fact, in a briefing held prior to the launch, U.S. State Department spokesman Matthew Miller responded to a question about the satellite launch plan by saying that the U.S. is concerned about North Korea’s ballistic missile program.

In addition, attention is being paid to the possibility of technology transfer to Russia during North Korea’s so-called satellite launch.  Spokesperson Miller explained in this regard that U.S. concerns about military exchanges between Russia and North Korea are well known.

At the same time, he emphasized that Russia’s transfer of ballistic missile technology to North Korea is a violation of the UN Security Council resolution, which it voted in favor of.

In addition, we once again urged North Korea not to supply weapons that could be used in Russia’s war of aggression.

U.S. basically ICBM… ‘Tactile’ technology transfer to Russia

It is understood that the United States is currently conducting a detailed analysis of the situation following North Korea’s launch.

As North Korea launched earlier than originally planned, it is expected to respond based on a detailed analysis of the reason, the trajectory drawn by the projectile, and the total distance traveled.

In addition, we once again urged North Korea not to supply weapons that could be used in Russia’s war of aggression.

We will announce our position immediately after North Korea’s launch and as soon as we understand the relevant details. North Korea’s position is that the main reason for launching a reconnaissance satellite is to monitor US military actions, but the US position is that North Korea’s satellite launch itself constitutes a violation of UN Security Council resolutions.

The United Nations also convened the Security Council following North Korea’s launch of a reconnaissance satellite.

Accordingly, similar movements are expected to resume.

In general, as discussions at the Security Council level have been at a standstill, the likelihood of an additional agreement, such as a separate resolution, is not very high this time.

However, as China and Russia among the permanent members have different positions from the United States, it is not easy to reach a binding conclusion such as an additional resolution at the UN Security Council level.

Accordingly, it appears that this matter will be referred to the full UN Security Council meeting and, if no conclusion is reached, the resolution will be processed at the General Assembly.

This has been reported so far from Washington.

The Putin Visit Could Mean Russia Makes North Korea’s Military Even Deadlier

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s June 18-19 visit to North Korea will further enhance the recently reinvigorated bilateral relationship.

A large number of Russian experts traveled to North Korea after the September 2023 summit to help with North Korea’s spy satellite efforts.

The U.S. must enforce its laws more diligently and lead an international coalition to comprehensively target Pyongyang and its accomplices.
